About Parco Naturale del Marguareis

Parco Naturale del Marguareis is a remarkable protected natural park in the Ligurian Alps, offering extensive karst landscapes, diverse alpine ecosystems, and opportunities for hiking, spelunking, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parco Naturale del Marguareis is located in the southwestern Alps straddling the regions of Piedmont and Liguria in Italy. This park protects the Marguareis massif, the highest portion of the Ligurian Alps, renowned for its extensive karst topography comprising caves, dolines, and sinkholes. The park covers a large portion of the Alpi Marittime Natural Park's northern boundary and is characterized by steep limestone cliffs, alpine meadows, and dense forests of beech and conifers. The Marguareis massif reaches an elevation of 2,651 meters (Monte Marguareis), the highest peak in the Ligurian Alps, serving as a focal point for hikers and climbers. Ecologically, the park hosts rare plant species such as the Ligurian Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), several endemic orchids, and a diverse fauna including chamois, roe deer, marmots, golden eagles, and the elusive brown bear which occasionally wanders into the area. The park's karst caves, including the Grotta del Rio Martino and Grotta di Marguareis, are famous for speleological explorations attracting experienced cavers. Recreational activities primarily center around a network of hiking and mountain biking trails with varying difficulty levels, offering panoramic alpine views and access to wildflower-rich pastures. The park also emphasizes sustainable tourism with careful conservation efforts to preserve fragile alpine habitats. Visitors can explore traditional mountain villages near the park entrances and experience local Piedmontese culture and cuisine. Parco Naturale del Marguareis appeals to outdoor enthusiasts interested in alpine ecology, geology, and tranquil natural beauty away from heavily trafficked tourist areas.
