About Parque Nacional El Tepozteco

Parque Nacional El Tepozteco is a scenic national park in Morelos, Mexico, famous for its rugged mountain terrain, rich biodiversity, and the ancient Aztec temple atop its peak. It offers hiking, wildlife observation, and cultural history in a lush forested setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parque Nacional El Tepozteco is located in the Sierra del Tepozteco mountain range near the town of Tepoztlán in the state of Morelos, Mexico. Established in 1937, this national park protects 2,066 hectares of predominantly pine-oak forest characterized by rugged rocky terrain and deep canyons. The park's highlight is the historic Tepozteco pyramid, an Aztec temple dedicated to Tepoztecatl, the god of pulque and fertility, perched at the summit of Cerro El Tepozteco (approximately 2,720 meters elevation). The hike to this archaeological site is a popular moderate-to-strenuous trail offering impressive views of the valley below and surrounding landscapes. Ecologically, the park supports diverse flora including pines, oaks, ferns, and xerophytic shrubs, and fauna such as squirrels, opossums, and a variety of birds including raptors and hummingbirds. Its proximity to Tepoztlán, a town known for vibrant artisan markets, spiritual retreats, and traditional cuisine, enhances its cultural visitor appeal. The park is cherished for both outdoor recreation—primarily hiking and nature walks—and for its deep cultural heritage tied to indigenous history and religious significance. Visitors experience a combination of physical activity, natural beauty, and archaeological discovery within a single trip. Parque Nacional El Tepozteco remains a cherished green refuge amid the urban expansion of nearby Cuernavaca and Mexico City.
