About Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros

Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros is a distinctive protected area in central Portugal, celebrated for its karst landscape, extensive cave systems, and rich biodiversity, offering diverse outdoor adventures including hiking, caving, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the limestone massif between the Centro and Lisbon regions of Portugal, Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros (PNSAC) encompasses approximately 389 square kilometers of karstic terrain marked by imposing cliffs, caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. The park was established in 1979 to protect the unique geological formations of the Aire and Candeeiros mountain ranges, which are key components of the Estremenho limestone plateau. This natural park is renowned for its extensive speleological network, including the famous Mira de Aire caves—the largest tourist caves in Portugal—and the Algar do Pena cave, both offering spectacular subterranean landscapes. Ecologically, the area supports Mediterranean maquis shrubland and cork oak woodlands and is home to diverse fauna such as the Iberian lynx, golden eagle, and several bat species that inhabit the cave systems. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy well-marked hiking trails that traverse scenic overlooks, dolines, and historical ruins, as well as mountain biking routes and rock climbing sites. The park also features archaeological sites dating from prehistoric times, including megalithic monuments that punctuate the landscape. With relatively easy access from Lisbon and Coimbra, the park provides an excellent combination of geological wonders, cultural heritage, and recreational opportunities, attracting nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Visitors benefit from dedicated visitor centers that offer interpretative resources, guided tours into caves, and information about conservation efforts.
