About Parque Natural Los Alcornocales

Parque Natural Los Alcornocales is a vast protected natural park in southern Spain known for its extensive cork oak forests, rich biodiversity, and scenic landscapes offering outstanding hiking, wildlife watching, and cultural heritage experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parque Natural Los Alcornocales is located in the southernmost region of mainland Spain, spanning the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga in Andalucía. It is one of the largest protected natural parks in Spain, renowned for its sprawling cork oak (Quercus suber) forests—the most extensive in the world—covering over 168,000 hectares. The park's geography is characterized by rugged limestone mountains, deep river valleys, and several Mediterranean microclimates that support a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. The park is a refuge for many species including the endangered Iberian lynx, Spanish imperial eagle, and Barbary partridge. Rich in history and culture, the territory holds vestiges of prehistoric settlements, Roman roads, and traditional rural villages preserving age-old cork harvesting techniques and artisanal products. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy more than 850 kilometers of marked trails weaving through dense forests, mountain ridges, and river gorges. The park offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and horseback riding. Notable landmarks include the Alcornocales forest massif, the La Sauceda historical area, and the scenic Guadalete River valley. The area is particularly popular in spring and autumn for mild weather and vibrant natural colors. Parque Natural Los Alcornocales appeals to nature lovers seeking remote wilderness, cultural heritage, and rich biodiversity within Spain’s unique Mediterranean environment.
