About Patvinsuo National Park

Patvinsuo National Park offers expansive peat bogs, old-growth forests, and pristine wetlands, making it a prime destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts in eastern Finland.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Patvinsuo National Park is located in the North Karelia region of eastern Finland and covers approximately 105 square kilometers of diverse natural environments. The park is characterized by vast bogs, fens, and large swamp areas, interspersed with old-growth forests dominated by pine, spruce, and birch trees. This rich wetland ecosystem supports a wide variety of wildlife, including rare bird species such as the Siberian jay, black woodpecker, and the elusive capercaillie. The park's network of boardwalk trails and observation towers provides visitors with access to its otherwise fragile habitats while offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Historically, the area has been shaped by the retreat of the last Ice Age, leaving behind a mosaic of peatlands that are important for carbon storage and biodiversity. Outdoor recreation in Patvinsuo is focused on hiking, birdwatching, camping, and cross-country skiing in winter months. Several marked trails range in length and difficulty, with cabins available for overnight stays. The park is also popular for educational nature trips and environmental research due to its unique wetlands and protected status since its establishment in 1982. Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere enhanced by the quietness of the swamp wilderness and the clear, dark waters of the ponds widespread throughout the park.
