About Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands

Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands protect rugged coastal bluffs and rare habitats along California’s northern coast, offering exceptional opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic coastal exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Situated along the remote Northern California coast in Mendocino County, Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands encompass approximately 2,000 acres of protected coastal bluffland between the towns of Point Arena and Manchester. This area features dramatic cliffs, rocky shorelines, tide pools, and coastal prairie habitats that support a diversity of plant and animal species, including threatened and endangered species like the tidewater goby and western snowy plover. The lands were acquired and are managed through a partnership between federal agencies and local conservation groups to preserve pristine coastal ecosystems and provide public access to this rarely disturbed stretch of coastline.

Visitors can enjoy peaceful hiking along the blufftops with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, opportunities to observe migrating gray whales offshore, and birdwatching in diverse coastal habitats. The area is home to rare coastal prairie plants, native wildflowers, and nesting seabirds. Although there are no developed campgrounds or extensive trail systems on the site, several informal trails and viewpoints provide access to spectacular ocean vistas and secluded beaches. The site’s historic legacy includes nearby Point Arena Lighthouse, which serves as an important navigational landmark and visitor attraction.

The blend of marine, coastal, and upland environments supports recreational activities suited to nature lovers seeking solitude and scenic beauty. Its remote location, wild character, and relatively low visitor numbers ensure an immersive natural experience along the California coast. Efforts to maintain habitat integrity include controlling invasive species and protecting sensitive shoreline areas while balancing public access with conservation goals.
