Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Presqu'ile Provincial Park is located along the north shore of Lake Ontario near Brighton, Ontario. The park covers a peninsula extending into the lake, creating sheltered bays and diverse coastal environments that include sandy beaches, marshes, forests, and dunes. Its name means "almost island" in French, reflecting the park's geography as a narrow strip of land connected to the mainland. The park's location on a major migratory path for birds makes it a premier birdwatching destination, hosting over 300 species annually, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. Visitors can explore the park’s 12 kilometers of family-friendly trails that weave through woodlands, along shorelines, and over dunes. Beaches provide swimming and picnicking in summer, while fishing and kayaking are popular on Lake Ontario and in the park’s marshes. Winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Presqu'ile also has a large campground with over 400 sites, including serviced and unserviced options, making it a favored spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Notable landmarks include the Presqu'ile Lighthouse, dating back to 1840 and now a small interpretive center. The park’s combination of natural features, accessible location approximately 80 kilometers east of Toronto, and focus on conservation and recreation draws over 300,000 visitors annually. Facilities support education, wildlife watching, and day-use activities, making Presqu'ile Provincial Park a versatile natural retreat spanning all seasons.
