Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, straddling the border of Montana and Wyoming, is a unique protected area dedicated to preserving the habitat of America's wild horses. Established in 1968, this area is home to a herd of approximately 120 wild horses, descendants of the Spanish horses brought over by explorers centuries ago. Spread across approximately 38,000 acres, the range includes high desert landscapes and the upper reaches of the Pryor Mountains, creating a variety of ecosystems that support diverse wildlife. Visitors can enjoy stunning vistas, rugged terrain, and an opportunity to witness the majestic horses in their natural environment. Recreation opportunities include hiking, horseback riding, and vehicle tours. The range is rich in history, with its significance to American Indian tribes, and its geological features make it an inviting spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
