Originally a basalt quarry providing materials for the city’s streets, the site was transformed into a civic park in the late 1930s and named to honor Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother during her visit to Canada in 1939. Today, it is managed by the Vancouver Park Board and attracts more than a million visitors annually. The park’s highlights include the Quarry Garden, a sunken garden with rock walls and seasonal floral displays; the Bloedel Conservatory, a tropical dome housing exotic birds and plants; and beautifully maintained formal gardens such as the rose and perennial gardens.
