About Quill Lakes International Bird Area

Quill Lakes International Bird Area is a vital wetland habitat known for supporting massive concentrations of migratory birds, especially waterfowl and shorebirds.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in east-central Saskatchewan, Canada, Quill Lakes International Bird Area encompasses a series of saline and freshwater lakes, including Big Quill Lake, Middle Quill Lake, and Little Quill Lake, which together form one of the largest wetlands in the Canadian prairies. The area spans approximately 200,000 hectares and serves as a critically important staging and breeding habitat for migratory birds along the Central Flyway. It supports internationally significant populations of species such as the Ross's and Snow Geese, American White Pelicans, various species of ducks, and a diverse array of shorebirds. Beyond avian life, the ecosystem features salt-tolerant plants, marshes, and open waters that create distinctive ecological conditions. Historically, the Quill Lakes have been recognized for their birdlife since the early 20th century, and today the site is designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Recreationally, the area is popular for birdwatching, photographic expeditions, and nature study. Observation points and small trails facilitate wildlife viewing, while the surrounding rural landscapes add to the region’s quiet charm. Its remote, open environment offers visitors the opportunity to witness large migratory bird flocks and spectacular seasonal events like goose staging in spring and fall. With minimal development, the Quill Lakes area is prized for its wild character and vital role in global bird conservation.
