Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Risdon Brook Reserve, located on the eastern outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania, serves as an important natural and recreational resource. The reserve is centered around the Risdon Brook Reservoir, which provides a source of fresh water to the local community. The surrounding forest is composed primarily of native eucalyptus species interspersed with understorey plants and ferns, creating habitat for a number of native wildlife including birds, marsupials, and insects. The area’s history includes use by local Aboriginal people and later European settlers who developed the water supply infrastructure. Today, it is managed for both conservation and recreation. The reserve offers a network of walking trails that wind through forested sections and around the reservoir, giving visitors opportunities for light hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. A picnic area near the reservoir is popular with families and groups seeking a low-key outdoor experience close to Hobart. The natural setting supports species such as the green rosella, grey fantail, and occasional sightings of Bennett’s wallabies. Although not a large protected area, Risdon Brook Reserve plays an important role as a green space with easy access to urban amenities. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and the ability to enjoy Tasmania's southern forest landscape without venturing far from the city. Facilities are limited but well-maintained, making it suitable for day-use visits.
