Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Rocky Narrows Reservation encompasses approximately 491 acres of forested land and riverfront along the Charles River in the towns of Sherborn and Dover, Massachusetts. The reservation features striking granite outcrops and steep cliffs that rise above the river's narrow channel, creating dramatic views and a varied landscape shaped by glacial activity. The terrain is characterized by hardwood forests, including oak, maple, and hickory, as well as wetlands and wildlife habitats. Historically, the area was used by Native American tribes and later by colonial settlers, with evidence of old stone walls and logging trails found throughout. Today, Rocky Narrows is managed by The Trustees of Reservations and offers a network of maintained trails totaling several miles, making it popular for hiking, birdwatching, and nature study. The rugged ledges provide opportunities for rock scrambling and scenic overlooks of the Charles River, which also supports canoeing and kayaking. It is a tranquil getaway close to Boston, combining natural beauty with easy accessibility. Visitors often appreciate the peaceful setting and diverse flora and fauna, including frequent sightings of local bird species and small mammals.
