Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Rossie T. Priory Preserve is a 460-acre protected coastal area located in the town of Stockton Springs, Maine. The preserve features a variety of habitats including tidal marshes, salt meadows, estuaries, and rocky coastal uplands. These ecosystems support a rich diversity of plant and animal species, making it an important refuge for migratory birds, shorebirds, and amphibians. The preserve is named after Rossie T. Priory, a local figure recognized for contributions to conservation and community support. Visitors can explore peaceful trails through woodlands and along water’s edge, birdwatch at the estuary, and enjoy views of the Penobscot Bay. The area is especially popular in spring and fall during migratory seasons, when bird activity is at its peak. The preserve also supports coastal fisheries and serves as an educational site for local schools and conservation groups. With relatively easy terrain, compact trail systems, and no crowds, Rossie T. Priory Preserve offers a quiet retreat for paddlers, hikers, photographers, and naturalists. Interpretive signage provides information on local ecology and cultural history. The site’s combination of coastal wetlands and upland forest creates a unique setting to experience Maine’s natural coastal environment away from more developed parks. Though maintained as a preserve with minimal development, it remains open year-round, rewarding visitors with changing seasonal landscapes and wildlife activity.
