Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Santee Coastal Reserve is an expansive area of protected land in South Carolina dedicated to the conservation of wildlife habitats and the preservation of ecological diversity. Spanning 24,000 acres, the reserve encompasses a variety of ecosystems including tidal creeks, marshlands, and upland forests. Originally established to protect crucial wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl, the area now also serves as a sanctuary for numerous species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered. Visitors to the reserve can explore a network of trails that wind through scenic landscapes, offering opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and nature photography. The reserve's waterways and wetlands are especially appealing to those interested in paddling or fishing. Historically, the land has played a significant role in regional efforts to manage and restore natural resources, making it not only an ecological haven but also a point of interest for conservationists and historians.
