Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sanxiantai Coastal Park is located on the east coast of Taiwan in Taitung County. It encompasses a rocky shore, a small offshore island, and surrounding coastal waters renowned for their geological and ecological significance. The park is famous for its distinctive red eight-arched footbridge that links the mainland to Sanxiantai Island, whose name means “Terrace of the Three Immortals.” This site is steeped in local legend involving three Taoist immortals who once visited the island. The landscape features rugged volcanic rock formations, natural tidal pools, and coral reefs that support a diverse range of marine life, making it a favored destination for snorkeling, tide pooling, and nature observation. Visitors often hike the gentle coastal trails that wind through unique coastal flora and enjoy bird watching, especially migratory species. The park’s natural beauty is complemented by cultural elements such as stone inscriptions and statues that highlight its mythological background. Sanxiantai is also celebrated annually during the lantern festival and other cultural events that reflect indigenous and Taiwanese heritage. Its combination of accessible hiking, dramatic scenery, and ecological richness appeals to outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and families seeking a relaxed coastal outing with opportunities to engage intimately with Taiwan’s coastal environment.
