Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Serra dos Candeeiros Natural Park is situated in the Santarém district of central Portugal, encompassing parts of the municipalities of Santarém and Rio Maior. The park protects a limestone massif characterized by a rugged karst landscape with caves, sinkholes, underground rivers, and rocky cliffs, creating uniquely scenic and ecologically important terrain. The area covers approximately 17,500 hectares, forming an important refuge for specialized flora and fauna adapted to the dry Mediterranean climate and rocky soils. Rich biodiversity includes rare orchid species, the Iberian lynx, and a variety of birds such as the Bonelli’s eagle and peregrine falcon. Historically, human presence dates back to prehistoric times, with many archaeological sites and traditional villages dotting the park. Visitors are drawn by outstanding outdoor opportunities, including hiking and caving in the world-famous limestone caves such as Gruta da Lapa dos Frades, bird watching, and mountain biking on well-marked trails near the villages of Minde and Alcanede. Scenic viewpoints atop rocky outcrops provide panoramic views of the surrounding plains and forested hills. The park also hosts occasional cultural events celebrating local traditions and the symbiotic relationship between people and nature. Serra dos Candeeiros is a prime destination for those seeking to explore a varied Mediterranean ecosystem combined with geological wonders and rural heritage in a peaceful natural setting.
