About Shawnee Prairie Preserve

Shawnee Prairie Preserve is a significant natural area in Ohio known for its large expanse of prairie habitat and diverse species, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and nature study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Shawnee Prairie Preserve is located in southern Ohio, near the town of Cedarville in Greene County. The preserve covers more than 1,150 acres of tallgrass prairie, a rare ecosystem in Ohio, maintained through controlled burns and careful management. It represents one of the largest remnants of prairie in the state and serves as an important refuge for many prairie-dependent plants and animals, including species that are rare or endangered. The preserve is managed by The Nature Conservancy and offers several miles of trails that wind through the grassy uplands and adjacent woodlands, providing visitors with diverse scenery and seasonal wildflower displays. Its prairie environment contrasts with the predominantly forested landscape of the region, offering a unique outdoor experience. The preserve also has historical significance as prairie once covered much of Ohio before being converted to agriculture. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, particularly during migration periods, with species such as the regal regal fritillary butterfly and upland sandpiper frequently seen. The Shawnee Prairie Preserve is a valuable educational and conservation site, drawing naturalists, scientists, and outdoor enthusiasts. The preserve is accessible year-round and is popular for quiet hiking and photography. It does not have developed campground facilities, but nearby state parks provide camping options. The open skies and gentle topography make it a peaceful setting for appreciating the natural heritage of Ohio's prairie landscape.
