About Sierra de Gredos Regional Park

Sierra de Gredos Regional Park protects a rugged mountain range known for its dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and diverse wildlife, offering exceptional opportunities for hiking, climbing, and nature observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sierra de Gredos Regional Park encompasses the central section of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range in the Iberian System of Spain. Spanning over 86,000 hectares, the park features sharp granite peaks, glacial cirques, pristine high-altitude lakes, and fertile valleys. Its highest point, Pico Almanzor, rises to 2,592 meters, making it the tallest summit in the range and a popular challenge for climbers. The park’s geography was shaped by past glaciations, evident in its rugged relief and moraine-strewn valleys. Ecologically, it supports a wide range of habitats from Mediterranean oak groves and juniper scrublands at lower elevations to alpine meadows and rocky outcrops. Endangered species such as the Iberian ibex, black vulture, and Spanish imperial eagle inhabit the area, highlighting its conservation value. The park also preserves cultural heritage sites including traditional mountain villages like Hoyos del Espino and natural landmarks such as the Circo de Gredos and the Almanzor Glacier remnants. Outdoor recreation is a major draw, with well-marked trails for hiking and mountain biking, rock climbing on granite crags, fishing in cold mountain streams, and winter sports in snowier months. Birdwatchers and naturalists frequent the park due to its diverse fauna and flora. Visitor centers provide information on park ecology, safety, and local customs. The Sierra de Gredos Regional Park offers a wide range of activities year-round, making it a key destination for those seeking mountainous landscapes with rich biodiversity and outdoor adventure in central Spain.
