About Sierra de Guadarrama National Park

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park is a mountainous protected area near Madrid, known for its stunning granite peaks, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural history. It offers year-round outdoor adventures including hiking, climbing, and wildlife watching.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park was established in 2013 as one of Spain's newest national parks, covering a significant portion of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range in central Spain. Stretching across two autonomous communities, Madrid and Castile and León, it protects a unique Mediterranean mountainous ecosystem characterized by rugged granite formations, high mountain meadows, glacial cirques, and extensive pine and oak forests. The park's highest peaks reach over 2,400 meters, with notable summits such as Peñalara, the tallest in the range, and La Maliciosa, both popular climbing and hiking destinations. The area hosts a rich biodiversity, including endangered species like the Spanish Imperial Eagle, Eurasian brown bear traces, and abundant amphibians and reptiles. Historically, the mountains have served as a cultural and natural barrier, with many traditional pastoral and rural practices still evident. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities; numerous trails of varying difficulty traverse scenic valleys, crags, and mountain lakes, while winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitors are drawn to its striking landscapes, from the iconic granite face of La Pedriza to the tranquil streams and highland meadows. Accessibility from Madrid makes it a favorite destination for both locals and tourists seeking a nature escape close to the city. The park is also important for education, research, and environmental conservation efforts, balancing human activities with protective measures.
