About Škocjan Caves Natural Park

Škocjan Caves Natural Park is a remarkable karst cave system renowned for its vast underground chambers, rushing subterranean river, and rich ecological and geological significance, offering visitors dramatic cave explorations amidst a unique natural setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Škocjan Caves Natural Park, located in southwestern Slovenia near the border with Italy, covers an expansive karst landscape characterized by one of the world's most extraordinary underground cave systems. The park protects a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its immense network of caverns and gorges carved by the Reka River. Stretching over 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) underground, the caves boast the largest known underground canyon in the world, with chambers reaching heights of up to 146 meters (480 feet). The subterranean river dramatically disappears into the karst plateau, only to resurface after traveling underground for 34 kilometers (21 miles), contributing to the park’s hydrological vitality.

Ecologically, the caves provide habitats for rare troglobitic species adapted to the dark, including various bats and cave beetles. The surface landscape features Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean vegetation, with rich diversity in endemic plants and karst phenomena such as sinkholes and natural bridges. Škocjan Caves have been known since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of human presence in the surrounding area stretching back thousands of years.

Visitors to the park can experience guided tours through the dramatic underground passageways, observing waterfalls, enormous stalactites and stalagmites, and the roaring subterranean river. Above ground, hiking and nature trails allow exploration of the caverns’ entrances, karst plateaus, and cultural heritage sites including old mills and traditional villages. The park’s educational center provides insights into karst geology and speleology, appealing to both casual tourists and scientific visitors alike. Škocjan Caves offers a compelling mix of adventure, natural wonder, and conservation values, making it a must-visit destination in Slovenia.
