Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Slovak Ore Mountains Protected Landscape Area (Slovenské rudohorie CHKO) spans a vast region in central Slovakia, covering part of the Inner Western Carpathians. This protected area is characterized by rolling mountains, deep river valleys, and extensive forests, predominantly spruce, beech, and fir. The landscape reflects both natural and historical influences, with remnants of old mining towns and cultural landmarks scattered throughout. The geological composition includes volcanic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, contributing to rich biodiversity and valuable mineral deposits. The area provides critical habitat for numerous species, including lynx, brown bears, and rare birds such as the black stork and capercaillie. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore a network of well-maintained hiking and mountain biking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints and natural monuments. Noteworthy spots include the Plejsy lookout tower offering broad vistas, the ancient Čierna Hora (Black Mountain) massif, and the picturesque valleys shaped by the Torysa and Hornád rivers. Visitors enjoy seasonal activities involving hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The protected landscape area is also an important site for natural research and environmental education in Slovakia. With its scenic trails, cultural heritage sites, and diverse ecosystems, the Slovak Ore Mountains provide visitors with opportunities for adventure as well as quiet nature observation. Facilities like marked paths and nearby local accommodations support recreational use, while conservation efforts maintain the ecological integrity of this mountainous region.
