About Shikahogh State Reserve

Shikahogh State Reserve is one of Armenia’s largest protected forested areas, known for its extensive old-growth forests and rich biodiversity, offering visitors a wilderness experience with hiking, wildlife observation, and unspoiled nature.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Shikahogh State Reserve, located in the Syunik Province of southern Armenia, covers approximately 54,000 hectares of primarily dense, old-growth forest along the Vorotan River basin. The reserve is distinguished by one of the largest forested areas in the Caucasus, predominantly featuring oak, beech, hornbeam, and pine. Its diverse ecosystem supports a variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species such as the Caucasian leopard, bezoar goat, maral deer, and several bird species like the lammergeier. Historically, the reserve was established to preserve these unique forest habitats that remain largely untouched by commercial logging or development, making it vital for conservation efforts in the region. Visitors to Shikahogh can explore rugged mountain terrain, crystal-clear rivers, and steep cliffs that create dramatic landscapes. Outdoor recreation includes hiking through forest trails, birdwatching, and nature photography. Unlike many protected areas, Shikahogh offers a more remote and wild experience with limited facilities, appealing especially to adventurers seeking solitude and pristine natural settings. Nearby villages provide local cultural exchanges, while the reserve’s ecological significance as a genetic reservoir is recognized internationally. Because of its remoteness, planning ahead is advised, and visitors should be prepared for limited access and a backcountry experience. Shikahogh remains critical for maintaining biodiversity and acts as a natural corridor supporting migration and wildlife populations in the southern Caucasus region.
