The area provides valuable habitat for wildlife such as black-tailed deer, black bears, bald eagles, and various bird species. Historically, the mountain was used for logging and mining, but conservation efforts have enabled its transition into a recreational asset managed by Whatcom County. Visitors enjoy a wide range of activities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. Popular overlooks and viewpoints offer sweeping vistas of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia to the north, Mount Baker to the east, and the waters of Bellingham Bay to the west. Sumas Mountain Regional Park is valued for its proximity to urban areas yet maintains a tranquil natural setting.
