About Synevir National Nature Park

Synevir National Nature Park protects the pristine Carpathian mountain landscapes around Synevir Lake, known for its rich biodiversity and scenic hiking opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the Ukrainian Carpathians within Zakarpattia Oblast, Synevir National Nature Park was established in 1989 to preserve one of the region's most beautiful natural areas. The park covers diverse mountainous terrain ranging from dense beech and spruce forests to alpine meadows and the iconic Synevir Lake, often called the 'Pearl of the Carpathians.' This deep, glacial lake lies at an elevation of about 989 meters (3,245 feet) and is the largest and deepest lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The park's varied ecosystems are home to many rare and protected species, including brown bears, lynxes, wolves, deer, and numerous bird species. Historically, the region has strong ties to local Hutsul culture, visible in village crafts and traditions near the park boundaries. Outdoor enthusiasts visit Synevir for hiking, wildlife watching, fishing, and experiencing its tranquil natural beauty. Marked trails lead visitors through old-growth forests and scenic ridgelines, with several viewpoints offering impressive panoramas of the surrounding Carpathian peaks. In addition to the lake, natural landmarks such as the Shypit waterfall enhance the park’s appeal. Synevir’s relatively undisturbed landscapes and clear mountain streams provide a true wilderness experience within reach of regional towns. Visitors can learn about the area's geology, flora, fauna, and cultural heritage through education programs at the park’s visitor centers. Whether seeking active adventure or peaceful nature immersion, Synevir National Nature Park remains a treasured wildlife sanctuary and recreational destination in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
