Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Thale Noi Waterbird Park is part of the larger Songkhla Lake Basin, located in Phatthalung Province, southern Thailand. The sanctuary covers an extensive wetland ecosystem dominated by Thale Noi Lake, one of the largest shallow freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia. The area supports a diverse range of habitats including open water, reed beds, marshland, and rice paddies, making it a crucial breeding ground and refuge for many waterbird species. Recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, Thale Noi provides habitat for numerous resident and migratory birds, including the rare Baer's Pochard, Asian openbill stork, black-headed ibis, and various species of herons and kingfishers. The park's rich biodiversity extends beyond birds to include fish, amphibians, and aquatic plants like lotus and wild rice.
Visitors to Thale Noi Waterbird Park can explore its serene landscape via boat tours which glide through the reed beds for close wildlife observation. Several birdwatching towers and observation platforms enhance spotting opportunities. The sanctuary also offers opportunities for nature photography, especially during the migratory season (November to February) when the waterbird populations peak. Traditional stilt villages around the lake provide cultural insights into local lifestyles dependent on fishing and agriculture. Thale Noi's peaceful natural environment and relatively accessible location make it a prime destination for ecotourists, ornithologists, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking to experience one of Thailand’s most important wetland ecosystems.
