About The Iveragh Peninsula

The Iveragh Peninsula is a rugged and scenic coastal region in southwestern Ireland, famed for the spectacular Ring of Kerry route, diverse landscapes, and abundant outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife watching, and cultural exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Iveragh Peninsula, located in County Kerry on Ireland’s southwest coast, is the largest peninsula in the region and a celebrated natural and cultural landmark. Stretching approximately 60 miles around, it boasts a dramatic coastline with towering cliffs, secluded beaches, and bays sheltered by the Atlantic Ocean. Interior landscapes feature lush mountains, peat bogs, freshwater lakes, and native woodlands. Dominated by the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range, the peninsula includes Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest peak at 1,038 meters (3,406 feet).

Ecologically, the peninsula is notable for its diverse habitats supporting rare bird species, marine life, and endemic plants. The Atlantic coastline harbors important seal colonies and provides migration routes for various seabirds. Historically, the area is steeped in Gaelic culture and history, with numerous archaeological sites, ring forts, and ancient monastic settlements interspersed throughout the landscape.

Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the peninsula year-round to trek along sections of the Kerry Way, one of Ireland’s premier long-distance trails, or to enjoy the panoramic vistas along the Ring of Kerry scenic drive. The peninsula’s remote beaches and coves offer fishing, kayaking, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, while traditional villages like Sneem and Waterville provide cultural and culinary charm. The Iveragh Peninsula balances its wild, rugged character with hospitable local communities, making it a destination that appeals to hikers, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
