Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Tinnerö Ekopark, established in 2002, is a large managed nature park located south of Linköping in Östergötland County, Sweden. It covers an area of approximately 6,300 hectares and features one of the largest continuous oak forest landscapes in northern Europe. The park is a blend of ancient pastures, grasslands, meadows, wetlands, and deciduous forests that have been influenced by traditional Swedish forestry and agricultural practices. This mosaic creates habitats that support a wide variety of flora and fauna, including many rare and protected species such as the hermit beetle and several orchid varieties. Visitors to Tinnerö Ekopark can explore over 120 kilometers of well-marked trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The landscape is dotted with cultural landmarks such as traditional red wooden cottages, ancient burial mounds, and historic fence lines known as "ödekrokar." Bird watchers will find the park especially rewarding, with observations of woodpeckers, owls, and other woodland birds. Seasonal highlights include springtime wildflowers and autumn's golden hues in the oak canopies. The ekopark also functions as an important living laboratory for sustainable forestry and conservation efforts, balancing recreation with ecological protection. Its proximity to the city of Linköping makes it a popular day-trip destination for locals and tourists alike seeking natural beauty and outdoor activities within easy reach.
