The parks trace their origins to the 1920s and continue to emphasize conservation alongside recreation. Popular sites such as Wildwood Preserve Metropark showcase historic features, including an early 20th-century estate, while Oak Openings Preserve Metropark protects one of the largest remaining oak savanna ecosystems in Ohio. Visitors enjoy miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, as well as designated fishing areas and paddle launches on several lakes and rivers.
