Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Tsarasaotra Park, situated within the city limits of Antananarivo, Madagascar, is one of the few remaining wetlands in the capital region and a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance. Covering a small but ecologically significant area, the sanctuary preserves natural wetland vegetation and freshwater lakes that provide habitat for over 100 bird species, including many endemic to Madagascar as well as migratory species traveling along the African-Eurasian flyway. The park was established to protect the fragile ecosystem from rapid urban expansion and pollution pressures. It features walking paths, observation towers, and educational signage designed to encourage birdwatching and environmental education. Visitors to Tsarasaotra can expect serene natural scenery contrasting sharply with the surrounding urban landscape, with opportunities to see species such as the Madagascar teal, grebes, herons, and various kingfishers. Besides birding, the park supports local conservation efforts and provides an important green space for residents and tourists alike. The sanctuary’s proximity to Antananarivo makes it highly accessible and a key spot for naturalists and photographers exploring the unique wildlife of Madagascar within an urban context. Management focus centers on habitat restoration and environmental awareness to safeguard this rare wetland remnant.
