Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Turtle Mountain Provincial Park covers approximately 186 square kilometers in the southwestern corner of Manitoba, bordering North Dakota, USA. The park is characterized by rolling hills, dense mixed forests of aspen, birch, spruce, and pine, along with numerous small lakes and wetlands. The area rises approximately 250 meters above the surrounding flat prairie, creating a distinct landscape within the region. Turtle Mountain has a rich Indigenous history, with the land traditionally used by Cree and Dakota peoples. Today, the park provides a mix of recreational activities throughout the year, including hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, fishing, and cross-country skiing. Notable features include Clear Lake, which is one of the cleanest lakes in the province and the park’s main recreational hub. Visitors can enjoy multiple well-maintained trails with scenic overlooks offering views of the forest and water bodies. Wildlife commonly seen includes white-tailed deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species such as loons and warblers. The park is also recognized for its efforts to protect local ecosystems and maintain a natural habitat for flora and fauna. Facilities in the park include several campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launches, and a popular swimming beach. Its proximity to the U.S. border and nearby towns like Boissevain adds to its appeal as a convenient getaway spot for Manitobans and visitors alike.
