About Ulva Island (Sanctuary)

Ulva Island is a predator-free sanctuary renowned for its rich native birdlife and untouched forest environment, offering visitors exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing and tranquil hiking.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ulva Island (Te Wharawhara) is a 270-hectare predator-free sanctuary located within Paterson Inlet on Stewart Island, New Zealand. The island is one of the few places in New Zealand where visitors can experience native bird species in an environment free from introduced predators such as rats, stoats, and possums. The island’s temperate rainforest is dense and lush, dominated by podocarps, southern rata, and rimu trees. Ulva Island was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1997, aiming to protect and restore indigenous fauna and flora. It serves as a critical refuge for endangered and rare bird species including the South Island saddleback (tīeke), South Island robin (toutouwai), tuatara, and several species of kiwi, notably the endangered weka. Visitors reach the island by a short water taxi ride from Oban, Stewart Island’s main settlement.

Recreational activities center on birdwatching, easy hiking along well-maintained trails that loop around the island, and photography. The absence of predators makes Ulva Island one of the best spots in New Zealand for close and confident viewing of native wildlife. Trails range from short walks to longer circuits that explore the island’s undisturbed forest and coastline. The island has no camping facilities, encouraging day trips focused on wildlife appreciation and nature immersion. Ulva Island’s ecological importance and easy accessibility make it a popular destination for conservation-minded travelers and bird enthusiasts.
