About Ussuriysky Nature Reserve

Ussuriysky Nature Reserve is a pristine protected area in Russia's Far East, renowned for its rich biodiversity, temperate forests, and efforts to conserve rare Amur tiger habitat.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1932, Ussuriysky Nature Reserve encompasses a diverse patchwork of temperate forests, river valleys, and wetlands in Primorsky Krai, Russia. The reserve protects one of the most biologically rich areas of the Ussuri River basin, hosting a remarkable blend of flora and fauna typical of the Ussuri Taiga ecosystem. This includes old-growth Korean pine and broadleaf forests, as well as over 1,000 plant species. Ussuriysky is a critical sanctuary for many endangered species, most notably the Amur tiger and Amur leopard, as well as Asiatic black bears, red deer, and over 300 species of birds. The reserve’s terrain is characterized by hilly landscapes, diverse forest types, and numerous streams feeding into the Ussuri River. While public access is highly restricted to ensure wildlife protection, the reserve’s scientific and educational missions are critical in advancing knowledge about the region's ecology. Limited guided ecotours and scientific visits offer rare opportunities for wildlife viewing and experiencing untouched forest ecosystems. Its location near the border with China further underscores its importance in cross-border conservation efforts for endangered species. Ussuriysky’s dedication to preserving one of Russia’s most vital temperate forest habitats makes it a key site for global biodiversity and wilderness protection.
