About Vankalai Sanctuary

Vankalai Sanctuary is a vital coastal wetland in northwestern Sri Lanka, renowned for its diverse migratory bird populations and unique mangrove habitat, offering rich birdwatching and nature observation opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Vankalai Sanctuary is a protected coastal wetland located along the Puttalam Lagoon on the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka, near the town of Mannar. Established in 1990, this sanctuary has become a key area for the conservation of wetland ecosystems and migratory waterbirds in the region. The sanctuary encompasses a mosaic of habitats including mangrove forests, salt marshes, mudflats, shallow coastal waters, and coastal sand dunes. These varied environments support a remarkable diversity of birdlife and aquatic species. Vankalai is internationally recognized especially as a critical habitat for migratory waterbirds traveling along the Central Asian Flyway. Species such as the greater flamingo, Eurasian spoonbill, black-headed ibis, and various species of terns and waders are commonly observed, particularly during the northern hemisphere winter months. The rich biodiversity also includes a variety of fish, crustaceans, and other wetland fauna. The sanctuary provides excellent opportunities for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and researchers interested in wetland ecology and migratory birds. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via several designated observation points and guided tours from nearby towns. The mangrove forests contribute to coastal stabilization and serve as nurseries for fish, highlighting the ecological importance of the protected area. While primarily focused on conservation, the sanctuary supports low-impact eco-tourism activities, emphasizing environmental education and community involvement. The relatively remote setting offers a tranquil natural experience away from urban pressures, with opportunities to witness spectacular bird migrations and vibrant wetland landscapes.
