Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Veleka River Wetlands are located in southeastern Bulgaria, flowing through the Strandzha Nature Park before emptying into the Black Sea near the village of Sinemorets. This protected wetlands area covers the floodplain of the Veleka River, featuring brackish water marshes, reed beds, and a dynamic river delta. It supports numerous habitats vital to both resident and migratory bird species, including rare and protected flora and fauna. The wetlands provide breeding grounds for waterfowl, amphibians, and fish, as well as a stopover site on the European migratory flyway. The area is highly valued for biodiversity conservation and offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and guided nature walks. Historically, the region has been influenced by traditional fishing and small-scale agriculture, balancing human use with ecosystem preservation. Visitors are drawn to its serene landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the chance to experience an intact natural wetland environment near the Black Sea coastline. Access is primarily via nearby villages, with minimal facilities to maintain the area's pristine condition. Educational programs and interpretive trails promote awareness of wetland ecology and the importance of protecting this fragile environment.
