Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Vikos–Aoös National Park, located in the region of Epirus in northern Greece, is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and unique geology. The park encompasses the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, and the Aoös River, both offering spectacular vistas and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Established in 1973, the park covers over 12,000 hectares of mountainous terrain with altitudes ranging from 550 to 2,500 meters. This diverse elevation supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Balkan chamois and brown bear. The park's trails provide excellent hiking opportunities, offering views of pristine forests and alpine meadows. Visitors can explore traditional stone-built villages nestled in the park, such as Monodendri and Papingo, which add cultural value to the natural setting. The park's combination of rugged beauty and tranquility makes it an attractive destination for hiking, climbing, and nature photography.
