About Villarrica National Park

Villarrica National Park is a captivating protected area in southern Chile, famed for its active volcano, dense forests, and vibrant volcanic landscapes that offer diverse outdoor adventures.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Villarrica National Park is located in the La Araucanía region of Chile and encompasses a dynamic landscape dominated by the Villarrica Volcano, one of Chile's most active volcanoes. The park covers a range of mountainous terrain, including volcanic cones, glaciers, rivers, and temperate rainforests. Established in 1940, it spans over 63,000 acres (approximately 26,500 hectares) and serves as an important conservation area for native wildlife and plant communities. The park is home to the Valdivian temperate rainforest, featuring species such as coihue, tineo, and lenga trees. Wildlife includes pudú deer, foxes, pumas, and a variety of birdlife like the Magellanic woodpecker and Andean condor. Recreationally, Villarrica offers excellent opportunities for hiking, skiing, fishing, and climbing, with routes ranging from scenic day hikes to challenging ascents of the volcano. The Villarrica Volcano itself is a major attraction, allowing experienced climbers to witness an active crater with glowing lava during clear weather conditions. Visitors can also explore nearby hot springs and enjoy panoramic views of the park's lakes, forests, and snow-capped peaks. Villarrica town, situated near the park's entrance, provides visitor services including guides, equipment rentals, and accommodations, making the park highly accessible. The park’s diverse environments appeal to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers alike.
