Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located along the southern coast of Maine, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses over 2,600 acres of salt marshes, tidal rivers, sandy beaches, and rocky shorelines. The reserve protects a vital estuarine ecosystem where freshwater from the Merriland and Littlefields rivers mixes with saltwater from the Gulf of Maine. These nutrient-rich habitats support a range of wildlife including migratory birds, fish species, shellfish, and rare plants. The area has long been used by Native American tribes and was later a site of colonial fishing and farming. Today, it serves as an important living laboratory for ecological research, conservation, and education coordinated by the state of Maine and NOAA. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for birdwatching, kayak and canoe trips along the calm estuary waters, and walking on trails that wind through salt marshes and forests.
