Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve is a 204-acre protected old-growth forest located in Evansville, Indiana. This preserve features some of the largest trees in the state and is one of the few remaining old-growth forests in the Midwest. The terrain consists of a mature deciduous forest dominated by towering oak, hickory, and beech trees, providing habitat for a diverse range of bird species, mammals, and native plants. Wesselman Woods offers visitors a peaceful escape within an urban setting, making it an accessible destination for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and bird watchers. The preserve hosts an interpretive center that educates guests on the natural history and conservation efforts of the area. Several miles of well-maintained trails wind through the forest, allowing visitors to explore its quiet woodland environment and spot wildlife including white-tailed deer, owls, and migrating songbirds. The preserve was established in 1965 by the Wesselman family and has since grown into an important ecological and recreational resource for the region. Seasonal programs, guided walks, and nature events further enhance the visitor experience. Wesselman Woods appeals to those seeking a natural setting for hiking, photography, environmental education, or simply enjoying the unique sense of serenity found under its ancient canopy.
