Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in Joplin, Missouri, Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center protects a rare ecosystem known as chert glades—rocky, open areas with specialized plants that thrive on limestone and chert bedrock. This 117-acre site uniquely combines upland glades, woodlands, and a riparian area along Wildcat Park Lake Creek, offering a refuge for many rare and endemic species. Its geographic placement in the Ozark Plateau contributes to remarkable biodiversity, including native wildflowers, butterflies, reptiles, and birds. The center was established to provide hands-on environmental education, outdoor recreation, and to foster local conservation efforts. Visitors can explore over three miles of maintained trails that wind through glades and forested hillsides, enabling close encounters with unusual plants like the state-listed Missouri bladderpod as well as wildlife such as the eastern collared lizard. The center also features interpretive exhibits, a native plant garden, and year-round educational programs. The site’s accessibility from Joplin makes it popular for family outings, birdwatching, and quiet nature hikes. Its emphasis on preserving rare habitats while offering engaging programs makes it an important destination within Missouri’s conservation landscape.
