Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in western Kentucky along the Ohio River, primarily within Henderson and Union counties. This protected area encompasses floodplain forests, wetlands, and riverine habitats that support a variety of plant and animal species. Key ecological features include bottomland hardwood forests, seasonal wetlands, and riparian corridors that serve as important stopover habitats for migratory birds. Established to conserve wildlife habitat and provide public recreational opportunities, Yellowbank WMA is managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. It is a popular destination for duck, deer, wild turkey hunting, as well as year-round fishing, especially for catfish and bass. Anglers also enjoy access to the Ohio River shoreline within the area. Several miles of informal walking trails and access points allow visitors to explore the natural surroundings, providing ample opportunities for bird watching and nature photography. The terrain is mostly low and flat, with riverine wetlands dominating the landscape, offering diverse aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitats. Access is typically via gravel roads and designated parking areas. The area is well-regarded for its quiet, rural setting and abundant concentrations of waterfowl and other wildlife. Hunting is the dominant recreational activity during specific seasons, but the WMA also welcomes hikers, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year. Its proximity to the Ohio River enhances its ecological value, supporting a range of aquatic species and contributing to regional biodiversity. Overall, Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area is an important conservation site that balances habitat protection with popular outdoor activities in western Kentucky.
