Gateway National Recreation Area spans more than 26,000 acres across New York and New Jersey, including the historic Sandy Hook peninsula, a vital stretch of land on the New Jersey coast. Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States since 1764, stands at the tip of the Sandy Hook barrier spit and provides striking views of the New York Harbor and Atlantic Ocean. The area features a variety of coastal habitats including beaches, salt marshes, maritime uplands, and maritime forests that support a diversity of wildlife such as shorebirds, migratory waterfowl, and fish species.
