About Katalalixar National Reserve

Katalalixar National Reserve protects a vast expanse of pristine temperate rainforest and fjords in the remote southern Chilean archipelago, offering unparalleled opportunities for wilderness exploration and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Katalalixar National Reserve is located in the remote southwestern part of Chile, within the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region. This protected area spans a portion of the Chonos Archipelago, characterized by rugged islands, deep fjords, and dense temperate rainforests. The low human presence and difficult access have preserved much of the reserve’s natural character. It features a cool, wet climate typical of the Magellanic Subpolar Forest ecoregion, one of the few remaining intact temperate rainforests in the world. The reserve is home to unique flora such as coihue and lenga trees, along with abundant mosses, lichens, and ferns. Fauna includes endangered species like the southern river otter, the Chilean cougar, and several rare bird species such as the Magellanic woodpecker and the Chilean pigeon. Despite its ecological importance, the reserve is largely undeveloped for tourism, appealing mostly to adventurous travelers and researchers. Access is generally by boat or small aircraft, and there are no established trails or campgrounds within the reserve itself. Activities include sea kayaking, wildlife photography, sport fishing, and trekking through untouched wilderness for those equipped for remote travel. The absence of facilities and the challenging weather make visiting a true expedition, rewarding those who seek solitude and unspoiled nature deep in the Patagonian wilds.
