Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area is located in Nantou County, central Taiwan. It encompasses the largest natural lake in Taiwan, named for its unique shape: the eastern side resembles a sun and the western side a crescent moon. Surrounded by verdant mountains and forests, the lake is a biodiversity hotspot with subtropical flora and fauna, including endemic bird species. The area holds deep cultural importance to the Thao indigenous people, the smallest aboriginal tribe in Taiwan, who have inhabited the region for centuries. Visitors are drawn to the lake’s serene beauty, scenic hiking trails, and water-based activities like boating, paddleboarding, and fishing. Notable landmarks include the iconic Wenwu Temple, dedicated to Confucius and Chinese gods, and the Ci’en Pagoda, offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding hills. The area also features bike routes that circle the lake, attracting cyclists with stunning vistas. The National Scenic Area is developed with well-maintained visitor facilities, including educational centers and shuttle transport. Annual cultural festivals such as the Sun Moon Lake Firefly Festival celebrate local traditions and nature. The blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and indigenous cultural heritage makes the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area an essential destination for outdoor enthusiasts and cultural travelers alike.
