Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Established in 1940, Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is located in east-central Mississippi, primarily within Noxubee, Oktibbeha, and Winston counties. The refuge spans over 48,000 acres and provides an essential sanctuary for migratory birds, native flora, and fauna. The varied ecosystems include bottomland hardwoods, mixed pine forests, and open fields, attracting a multitude of bird species such as the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, herons, and waterfowl. Historical sites within the refuge reflect its past as part of a Native American trade route and later as farmland before federal protection. Visitors enjoy numerous recreation opportunities ranging from hiking and birdwatching to fishing and photography, with Lake Loakfoma and Bluff Lake being notable landmarks that support abundant wildlife.
