About Grandmere Lake Natural Area

Grandmere Lake Natural Area is a remote high-altitude wilderness preserve in northern Colorado, known for its pristine alpine lake, subalpine forests, and excellent opportunities for low-impact recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Grandmere Lake Natural Area is located near Cameron Pass in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests of northern Colorado. The area protects a fragile subalpine ecosystem characterized by lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce forests, alpine meadows, and wetlands surrounding the shimmering Grandmere Lake. At an elevation around 10,000 feet, this natural area offers a peaceful refuge from urban development and serves as a habitat for diverse wildlife such as elk, moose, black bears, and a variety of bird species including the rare boreal owl and northern goshawk. The history of the region includes traditional use by Native American tribes and later settlement during the ranching era, but the area has remained relatively undisturbed since its designation for conservation. Recreation opportunities are centered on hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and snowshoeing in winter. The Grandmere Lake trail is a popular but less crowded route that rewards visitors with scenic views of the lake and surrounding peaks. The area’s fragile alpine wetlands require visitors to practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve water quality. Due to its remote setting and relatively short hiking distances, Grandmere Lake Natural Area offers a tranquil outdoor experience while connecting visitors with Colorado’s natural heritage. Wildlife watchers and nature enthusiasts particularly appreciate the area's solitude and undisturbed habitats. This natural area is accessible from Highway 14 near Cameron Pass, allowing for day trips or quiet overnight stays in nearby campgrounds.
