Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
White Lake Natural Area is situated in Schoolcraft County on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, approximately 10 miles east of Manistique. The area encompasses diverse landscapes, including crystal-clear lakes, wetlands, forested ridges, and swampy lowlands. It is centered around several small lakes and ponds, including the prominent White Lake that gives the area its name. The natural area is managed to preserve its ecological integrity, providing habitat for northern hardwoods, conifers, and myriad wetland plant species, creating an important refuge for native wildlife. Visitors can expect to encounter species such as beavers, otters, loons, black bears, and an abundance of songbirds. Historically, the area has remained relatively undisturbed due to its remote location and conservation status, allowing natural ecological processes to persist. Outdoor recreation is highlighted by hiking on its network of primitive trails, wildlife watching, fishing in White Lake, and snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in winter months. The landscape’s quiet lakes and streams are also ideal for canoeing and kayaking. White Lake Natural Area offers solitude and a chance to experience a northern Michigan wilderness setting without the crowds found in more heavily visited parks. It appeals to visitors interested in immersive nature experiences, birding, photography, and backcountry camping. The area's mixture of wetlands and mature forests provides some exceptional natural scenery and ecological diversity within Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
