Parc Natural de la Tinença de Benifassà is a protected natural park located in the mountainous region of the Valencian Community, near the border with Catalonia and Aragón. Characterized by steep limestone cliffs, deep river gorges, and dense forests predominantly made up of holm oaks, pines, and Mediterranean shrubland, the park spans an area of approximately 14,000 hectares. It is a biodiversity hotspot, sheltering species such as the Iberian ibex, wild boar, otters, and a variety of raptors including the golden eagle and the Egyptian vulture. The park’s rivers, including the Franqueta and the Barranc de la Vall, contribute to the scenic landscape with natural pools perfect for summer swims. Historically, the park area is dotted with medieval villages, hermitages, and ancient castles, showcasing traces of human settlement and land use dating back to the Middle Ages. Hiking is the most popular way to explore, with marked trails that traverse rugged terrain and pass by impressive natural landmarks like the dramatic Tinença cliffs and the Sierra de l’Espadà to the south. The remote and peaceful environment attracts nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers. The Tinença de Benifassà is less developed and sees fewer visitors compared to other natural parks in Spain, which allows for an intimate wilderness experience. The park is managed by the Generalitat Valenciana, which emphasizes conservation as well as sustainable outdoor recreation. Visitors enjoy scenic overlooks, quiet forest paths, and opportunities to connect with a relatively untouched Mediterranean ecosystem.
