Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Situated in the northeastern corner of the province of Jaén, Andalucía, the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas is a sprawling mountainous protected area covering over 2,000 square kilometers. This natural park is characterized by rugged limestone ranges, deep river gorges, vast pine and holm oak forests, and diverse Mediterranean ecosystems. It acts as a vital refuge for wildlife, including the endangered Spanish Imperial eagle, Spanish ibex, and Mediterranean mouflon. The park is recognized for protecting the headwaters of the Guadalquivir River and features unique karstic landscapes, crystal-clear rivers like the Guadalentín and Segura, and numerous waterfalls. Historically, the area has long been inhabited with archaeological sites and traditional mountain villages that add cultural depth to the scenic environment. Visitors are drawn to the park’s extensive network of well-marked hiking trails, which include routes to panoramic overlooks, natural pools, and access into the wilderness. Mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, and canoeing on the Segura River are popular activities. The park’s largest towns, such as Cazorla and Segura de la Sierra, provide excellent bases with amenities and interpretative centers. Its blend of ecological importance, dramatic scenery, rich flora and fauna, and outdoor adventure makes it a premier destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts in southern Spain.
