Serra de Aneto-Maladeta Natural Park is a prominent protected area located in the Maladeta massif in the Spanish Pyrenees within the autonomous community of Aragon. Established to preserve its unique alpine environment, the park encompasses a diverse range of geographical features including rugged peaks, expansive glaciers, deep valleys, and crystalline mountain lakes. The park is home to Aneto, the highest peak in the Pyrenees at 3,404 meters (11,168 feet), as well as the Maladeta and Posets massifs. Ecologically, the park supports a variety of habitats from subalpine and alpine meadows to coniferous forests, sustaining species such as the Pyrenean chamois, marmots, golden eagles, and bearded vultures. The glaciers, including the well-known Glacier de Aneto, are the southernmost in Europe and are of scientific interest due to their retreat in recent decades. Outdoor recreation is central to the park’s appeal: hiking trails offer access to high mountain passes and glacial cirques, while mountaineers seek the challenge of summiting Aneto and neighboring peaks. Several refuges and mountain huts provide staging points for multi-day excursions. The park’s scenic beauty, geological significance, and opportunities for both leisure and technical mountain activities attract visitors year-round. It plays a key role in regional conservation and sustainable tourism, balancing human use with the protection of its fragile environment.
