The White Mountains, locally called Lefka Ori, are a prominent mountain range occupying the western third of Crete, Greece’s largest island. Characterized by their pale limestone cliffs and peaks, the range includes more than 40 peaks exceeding 2,000 meters, with Mount Pachnes standing as the highest at 2,453 meters. The natural reserve protects a diverse landscape of alpine meadows, deep gorges, caves, and plateaus often blanketed with snow during winter months, giving the mountains their 'white' name. The rugged terrain is home to unique flora such as endemic Cretan mallow and rare orchids, alongside fauna including the critically endangered Cretan wild goat (Kri-Kri) and various birds of prey. Historically, these mountains offered refuge during various occupations and maintain archaeological sites including ancient shepherd shelters and Byzantine chapels. Visitors are drawn for hiking and mountaineering, featuring established trails like the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe, carved through the range. The temperate Mediterranean climate means summers are dry and hot in lower elevations, while higher elevations experience colder temperatures and occasional snow till late spring.
